I have experienced this problem installing 4.0 over 3.0.3. If this is
your problem, you need to boot the machine rebuild the kernel and run
lilo and you will be fine. Otherwise, you might try to just boot off
the boot disk and cd and use your alt keys to change to a shell, then
mount your drive and try to run lilo. Both of these methods have worked
for me, hope they are of some use to you.
