It's likely that the two controllers have different
Cylinder/Head/Sector (CHS) geometry mappings. You can try these
things:
1. With the old controller installed, ut "linear" in /etc/lilo.conf,
re-run lilo, and install the new controller.
2. Install the new controller, boot from floppy, and do a backup/restore
from tape.
Linux uses linear sector numbers, rather than the CHS numbers, so if
you can boot the machine using the new controller, you should be able
to mount the old hard disk and get data off of it.
