I did some research with wdc and then a bunch more testing, and it looks
like /afs/dev/user/amb/fglrx/fglrx_6_8_0-8.512-1.i386.rpm, aka ATI
Catalyst 8.7, is the current tentative winner.

That directory now has every release of the fglrx modules within the last
year or so and a README file explaining which is which, along with notes
on which ones are broken how. (The correspondence information is vital,
since ATI's versioning system is inconsistent over time and their master
version numbers, the version numbers of the archive packages, and the
verion numbers of the actual RPMs don't correspond in any reliably
meaningful way.) A rev or two older than 8.7 might also fly, but 8.8 is
irretreivably broken and 8.9 has major install issues.

Note that sometimes the kernel module from a newly installed rpm will
wedge the machine when the same running kernel had previously had a
different module loaded, but will be OK after reboot.
