He's asking for donations. We could, without violating any trusts or
licenses or copyrights or anything, not send him any money. We could
also approve (or not) a $10 expenditure. Or jik could send him a
check, since I imagine he'll be one of the primary users. My guess is
the guy who wrote the software would be so ecstatic to get a check at
all, that he wouldn't care that several thousand people had access to
the software here.
Shareware vendors which "demand" payment should be handled as if we
were buying a piece of commercial software. We find out what they'd
want for an educational site-license, and pay it if we think it's
worth it. We could certainly install it for a month or something on a
"trial basis" (logging how many times it's run, for how long, etc),
since that goes along with the spirit of shareware.
