I haven't tried this, so if I'm wrong I hope someone will hit me with a
clue stick.

Maybe it will work if you install the two in different locations (like
/usr/lib and /usr/local/lib) and/or make sure that there are no symbolic
links to the 1.1.1 libraries -- make sure the "libgtk.so" links and
whatever point to the 1.0.6 libraries.

This might only work if balsa is linked specifically against gtk1.1.1.
If it goes looking for just libgtk, this probably won't work.

It might be worth a try, unless someone else who knows better than I can
offer the real answer.
