Why? In theory, outgoing.mit.edu is supposed to be used by folks
off campus to relay their mail (this is especially true for Eudora
users that work from accounts off campus.) IIRC most of our installs
are on campus users and should be using athena.mit.edu (SSA, PCA) for
their mail sending. I think shifting that many on campus users (lots
of resnet folks are running Linux) is just going to overload outgoing
for no good reason. People off campus are going to notice when their
mail breaks. How about a readme that says "if you are offcampus, change
this line in sendmail.cf to read outgoing.mit.edu instead of athena.mit.edu"?
We shouldn't be putting an undue burden on the mail server just to make
things a little more convenient for the people living off campus. As
far as I can tell, it is resnet that is our primary market, not random
other offcampus people that happen to have some sort of net access
(like mediaone).

P.S. Perhaps we should get an official statement on this from postmaster.
Ron? Feel free to correct any of my assumptions about outgoing.mit.edu
and athena.mit.edu that are incorrect.
