Another update in the "Metacity hates Laura" thread:
After coming back from lunch, something had stolen the keyboard input.
No keys had any effect, the Caps Lock light was on and could not be
toggled.
I could drag windows around with the left button even without holding
down Alt, though other key bindings with Alt and a key (like alt-l,
which lowers windows) didn't have an effect.
The mouse cursor changed shape depending on the window it was over, and
the active window followed the mouse (that's how I have metacity
configured), but mouse clicks had no visible effect, most notably for
zephyrs, which didn't go away. (There wasn't anything convenient with
a button to press, and I didn't think to click on the close-window X for
other windows).
Killing and restarting metacity fixed the problem.
