Focus getting stuck

Several times, I've gotten focus "stuck" on a particular window in
metacity. All keyboard input goes to that window, and the cursor is
permanently set to the cursor type for that window, but mouse clicks do
nothing.
When the window was an eterm, starting an xterm from the "stuck" window
gave me a new xterm, and focus was then stuck to the xterm; when I
ctrl-d'd to get rid of the xterm, focus went back to the original
eterm. In this instance, running "punt metacity; metacity &" fixed
things; when focus is "stuck" to zephyr, I can't do anything useful
other than ssh into geskekelud and log myself out.
I don't have a recipe for reproducing this, but it seems to happen once
every couple of days. Is there something useful I should be trying to
do if I get in this state again?
