To clarify, when eterm or emacs have the cursor, they also have keyboard
input.  I've been able to restart metacity from the eterm prompt this
way, fixing the problem.

Now I'm slightly less confident of this.  I *think* I fixed it the first
time it happened by logging in under myself and killing zwgc, but that
doesn't seem to be doing the trick this time (having just tried it). 

The killed zwgc has turned into outlines of lots of blank zephyrs, but
they haven't vanished after five minutes.
