The load average increasing and my system becoming unresponsive may be
unrelated. 20 minutes after I restarted, I encountered
http://diswww.mit.edu/menelaus/bugs/26073 (because I had forgotten to
start my script to automatically kill sshd processes that appeared to be
triggering that problem).
