Further testing revealed that the problem only seems to occur in
"man", and is apparently introduced by "ul" (man pipes its output
into "ul -b | more -s -f").  I was unable to reproduce the problem
after doing setenv MANPAGER "more -s -f".

[It's still possible that the problem is a race condition in more,
though, and eliminating ul from the pipeline merely lessens the
likelihood of it occurring.]

I'll report this to SGI, but we might want to just use the MANPAGER
workaround.
