More or less.

Please explain. _You_, who are running the 7.7 January patch release on
a DECstation (remember, this is the platform you are claiming the fix
disappeared on) are having the authentication failed message.
Are "most librarians and many users" getting the authentication failed
message? Are they all running the 7.7 January patch release too? Or
are they all using your machine? Do you imagine this problem is
because xlogin was broken or because login was? Is the RS/6000 running
the patch release? How many groups do you appear to be in according to
your /etc/group file?

Noone did. It may have been inadvertently broken, however. But in a
quick look, I've found no changes which would affect it. I will look
harder for it after I get a reply from you, giving be a better idea
where to focus my attention.
The problem Ezra pointed out is not related to this, only applies to
RS/6000 xlogins, and was a stupid error on my part.
