Re: Did the 7.7 DECMips group fix get backed out?

Sorry for not being quite clear enough.

It's just me running the patch release now. I am afraid that if the
code goes out to the wider world, many librarians will be affected.
(I.E. this is not a bug that just affects wdc.)

Here are more details of the situation:

I have not touched /etc/group by hand at all but it shows me to be in 19
groups:

oglala% grep wdc /etc/group | wc
      19 19 387

oglala.mit.edu is one of the machines I use to test image display.

The images live on bulb.mit.edu, an RS/6000 running AIX 3.2.3 server
release (IE not touched, never to be touched until things are WELL
TESTED).

With Athena 7.6 I used to get "Authentication failed" messages on oglala
when trying to mount the NFS filesystems from bulb. We traced it to the
fact that the DECSTAtion could represent 32 groups in an outgoing NFS
request but that the RS/6000 would choke if there were more than 16.

The Authentication failure would not occur on Suns (and still does not
occur) because, at login time, we limit the group list to 16 and warn
the user logging in that some will be ignored.

At my request, this limit was imposed on the DECSTation for 7.7.
Perhaps the #ifdefs were changed but then not checked back into the
source tree, or something. Because I am now getting the old
"Authentication failed" message.

Interestingly, I DO have a /etc/group.local file which has me in only 11
groups. (But if memory serves, there is nothing to look at a
/etc/group.local file, it probably got that name when I hacked
/etc/group way back in 7.6 to get work done.

Also of interest: My Solaris 7.7 (WITH patch) Sun has no trouble
accessing the NFS files on bulb, but the /etc/group file there puts me
in 18 groups.

Hope this helps,
-wdc
