I've seen Open Office go into a File Recovery loop before.
I don't know if this will work for you, but it's worth a try:

Enter the recovery process, select the document that is to be recovered,
and then choose the option (I forget what it's called) to discard i.e.
give up on the recovery of the document.

Let us know if you're able to get beyond the loop.
