What were you trying to do?
Go to a URL in Mozilla. Mozilla had previously crashed and I had
to erase the lockfile and restart it.

What's wrong:
When I tried to type the first letter of the URL into the Mozilla
URL bar, Mozilla froze. Killing it, erasing the lockfile, and
restarting it produced the same result. An strace revealed it
was trying to read or write /tmp/.esd/socket. Removing the /tmp/.esd
     directory made Mozilla work again.

What should have happened:
Mozilla should have let me enter the URL. It appears that sometimes
when Mozilla crashes, esd can be left in an inconsistent state
--- inconsistent enough that Mozilla freezes each time it starts
up, even if killed and re-run. It's nonobvious to the user that
ESD is the source of the problem. Maybe Mozilla should be reconfigured
not to try to make sounds when the user is typing into the URL
bar (it doesn't seem to actually make any sound anyway). Or
maybe esd should be more robust in the face of Mozilla crashes.
