This appears to be bug 224337, which has been fixed in Mozilla 1.6 (see
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224337 for details). I'm
not yet sure whether it will be feasible to backport a fix to 1.5, as
the fixing patch for this bug (extensive in itself) does not apply to
our code base.
