Important note: you must actually log in as root to run athchanges. 
Right now, if you su to root and run athchanges, the GConf part of it
won't work; the gconftool-2 invocations will die with something like:

  ** ERROR **: Owner of /tmp/session-ghudson-1401/orbit is not the current user

  aborting...

Except that only the "aborting..." makes it through because we redirect
gconftool output to /dev/null.

This is why Alex's machine hadn't fully recovered.

"athrun release fixpanel" should do the trick, once the machine is
properly restored.  (I'm surprised the automatic panel-fixing mechanism
didn't work; I haven't looked into that yet.  But Alex's mail implied
that his panel looked wrong when he logged into other, properly working
machines, so clearly it didn't do the job.)
