This didn't work on the problem machine (dit, in N42-013). When I try
it and log back in, it asks me if I want to convert my gnome1 prefs to
gnome2 (I tried answering this both ways- it made no difference to the
subsequent behavior). Then, I get a couple of garbled gnome dialog
boxes, probably indicating some sort of failure- I can't read the text
in them. Then, I get a yellow terminal window with incredibly tiny
font size. About all I can do then is log out and back in again. When
I do, I get a yellow terminal with normal-sized fonts, and the funny
menus at the top.

After this state, I left my dot files as they were and tried logging
in on a different Sun- I get the funny menus at the top. I try the
fix as above on the other machine. When I log back in there, things
are back to normal. Then I log back in on the problem machine-
yellow terminal, funny menus at the top. I think two things are happening-
my dot files are getting corrupted, and some files local to the problem
machine are bad- nothing I do on the problem machine fixes the problem
there.

I went through at least 3 rounds of deleting these as I tried various things-
I'm not sure what state I was in when I created the last set- do you still
want them?

Could someone possibly make a house call? It might be easier to
understand what is going on.... I ran at least three things to try to
fix the machine: "/srvd/install/athchanges" as root, "athrun release
fixpanel" and "gconftool-2 --shutdown", and deleted all my ~/.gnome*
and ~/.gconf files at least five times... I strongly suspect that I've
got bad gnome files on this machine that aren't in my dotfiles...
Right now the lack ot key autorepeat is the most annoying part of this...
