My gnome problems have been solved! Many thanks to Greg for making a house
call to put the pieces together. For the record, I believe the hangup was
in running /srvd/install/athchanges as root as suggested by Garry- I su'd
to root instead of doing a console login, not realizing that it made a
difference.
When the script ran, it actually printed a bunch of "Abort" messages-
I should have reported this, but was dealing with a lot of other issues
yesterday and wasn't sure it indicated a problem.
