I believe the Mathematica Error Type 199 message indicates that the front end is unable to access its preferences directory (which in your case should be ~/.Mathematica.i386_linux3). I'd suggest a couple of things: 1. Try the standard startup method (this is working in general on Linux-Athena 5.2): add math; mathematica 2. Try moving aside your prefs. directory before you start mathematica (the vendor startup script will then try to create a new one for you, relying on standard things like your HOME environment variable).
