In order to followup and test things, I brought my
server up and running in compatibility mode with 2.0.10
and 1.2.26. I also built 1.2.26 seperately to use as
a client. When the 1.2.26 client attempts to connect
to the 2.0.10 server, the following happens:
leonardo% /usr/ssh/bin/ssh1 -v leonardo
SSH Version 1.2.26 [alpha-dec-osf3.2], protocol version 1.5.
Compiled with RSAREF.
leonardo: Reading configuration data /usr/ssh/config/ssh1/ssh_config
leonardo: ssh_connect: getuid 346 geteuid 0 anon 0
leonardo: Connecting to leonardo [18.33.0.75] port 22.
leonardo: Allocated local port 1020.
leonardo: Connection established.
leonardo: Remote protocol version 1.99, remote software version 2.0.10 (non-commercial)
leonardo: Waiting for server public key.
leonardo: Received server public key (768 bits) and host key (1024 bits).
Host key not found from the list of known hosts.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes
So basically, if athena were running 1.2.26, I could use the
athena client to connect to my 2.0.10 server (which, yes, for
various reasons the licensing agreement is acceptable for the
machine that I am running it on, despite the fact that it
may not be acceptable for several of the other machines in my
office.)
