AFAICT, ssh 1.2.26 cannot connect to a 2.0.x server either. (The sshd2
version 1 fallback path ends up sending two separate version strings
to the client, which violates the protocol spec.) There is alleged
sshd2 compatibility code in 1.2.26, but it does not cope with that.
It looks like you should try sending a bug report to ssh.fi.
