There is a fairly well-known problem that a lot of versions with vi
spuriously exit with an error status. This bug needs to be
investigated and reported to the OS vendors, but we're not
historically very good at reporting OS bugs in a timely fashion.

The reason is that /var/preserve doesn't have the proper permissions
for this feature to work, on the dialups. I seem to recall some
indication from the dialup maintainers that it may be intentional, but
I don't know for sure.
