SUBJECT: Minutes of the DCE SIG Quality Working Group meeting
held October 31, 1994
---------------------------------------------------------------
The DCE SIG Quality working group met on Monday, October 31,
at the Newton Marriot as part of the OSF Super Sig Week.
The following text is a summary of the meeting:
DCE Release 1.1 Quality Results:
-------------------------------
Susan Thompson, the Manager of Systems and Quality Group for DCE at the
OSF, gave a presentation on the quality of DCE 1.1. She discussed the
quality goals and compared them with the actual data. Overall, the
quality of the product was better than expected, given the absolute
time constraints put on the DCE product group.
A few highlights of the numbers include :
(1) There are over 366000 NCSS (Non Commented Source Statements)
that changed between DCE 1.0 and DCE 1.1.
(2) There are 63 fixes in the unintegrated tree.
(3) Over 2322 code defects were corrected in DCE 1.1
(4) Twenty five new system tests were written for DCE 1.1
(5) DCE 1.1 will ship with 369 open defect reports
Susan did an excellent job in the presentation and the Quality Working
Group would like to thank her for this information.
All of the metrics are available on the DCE 1.1 product tape.
Sharable Testware Document:
--------------------------
The Quality Working Group has been discussing the feasibility of having
sharable testware. The first step has been to put an outline of a
document together which will provide the framework for these tests. At the
last meeting, sections of the document were assigned to people so that
some ideas could be presented at this meeting.
Jim Sivak gave a quick summary of the Introduction section which is used
to define the document.
Bob Schaugaard, from Hal, discussed Configuration Guidelines. He talked
about minimum configurations, network connectivity, and split server
requirements.
William Poon, from Gradient, talked about two related sections. In
the discussion of Test Architecture and Scaffolding, several points were
made, including the need for non-Unix considerations and structural
flexibility. In the discussion of Tools and Drivers, he talked about
report filters and whether tests can be executed via remote test launchers.
Joanie Cooper presented an outline for the Test Documention requirements.
The outline was well received, with the addition of a few sections, including
ones on where the tests have been run and what the expected results
should be.
Work will continue on this document via email with the members of the
group.
There was a brief discussion on the need for a new chairperson for this
group. Jim Sivak volunteered, (or was volunteered), to take on the
position.
A discussion of the PST 1.2 process and product was begun. Issues of
quality and accountability were raised. This working group will continue
to monitor the PST 1.2 and will hopefully receive information on the
quality goals for the next meeting.
Finally, the Quality Working Group would like to thank its first chairperson,
Joanie Cooper, for all of her efforts in getting the group started and
in overseeing the activities for the last year and a half. She has
contributed a great deal to the direction and momentum of the group.
We wish her well in her new endeavors!! Thanks, Joanie.!!!!!
