What do people want out of relationships?

As I survey the wreckage of a relationship which up until very
recently was, and now is no more, I find myself wondering: so what
exactly was I looking for in a relationship?
And the sad, shocking fact is that I needed someone to love me and thus
validate me. Now that it's all over, I have to wonder whether I really
loved her, or whether I was just in love with being loved. If that was
really the reason why I was in a relationship, then (looking back
dispasionately), it's not a very healthy reason to want a relationship.
So, I want to ask all of you: What do you look for in a relationship?
Is it just sex? Or someone to share cooking duties with? Is it
someone to go see plays with? Or what?
I want to; I need to find some real reasons to try again; to find someone
new. Maybe next time around if I'm in the relationship for the right
reasons, it'll have a better chance of working out.
