Ok everybody. I apologise for the earlier message. I aimed it for
the wrong audience (actually, I just misunderstood the wide range of
people on apo-l).
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
What it means to have an FTP site is that other people can call a
computer (in this case, the one known as vtucs.cc.vt.edu, one of the
mainframes on our campus, virginia tech not vermont) and send and
receive files. Most mainframes on campuses support FTP. Most public
services that have internet mail do not. The only WELL KNOWN
exception is Delphi. If anyone wants information on that, I'll pass
along what I can. NOTE: I am not in any way related to or an expert
on the delphi service. Perhaps someone else might be more familiar
with the service.
Once you have logged into a remote machine and changed to the
appropriate directory, you can do a directory of the files, download
(receive) files, or upload (send) files.
The ftp host is currently in beta test, meaning that it might
disappear without notice. That is not likely though, but I got a nice
disclaimer in exchange for the site.
I currently have a 3 megabyte (3000K) quota. I will probably use it
up soon and should be able to get more. If someone tries to upload
something and gets an error, just let me know.
I'm still having a few minor problems with file handling on the site,
but hope to have it set soon. BTW, don't download the .uue files.
They are a pain to use. I am working on getting files to the site,
even as we speak.
If anyone needs more information/ a sample of how to call the site and
download files, send me email. (Private email, not to the list
please).
