Not to further innundate the e-mail boxes of Brothers, but an observation.

For the entire time I have been involved with this fraternity (since 1994),
this has been a topic of disucssion. And this has come up at all 5
Conventions that I have attended. And in every instance, it has not passed.

I would observe that the reason that the song does not change is NOT because
3/4 of all active brothers do not believe it should change, but because this
group of Brothers cannot agree collectively upon what version the song
should change to.

On several occasions, I have seen voting delegates say, "They didn't choose
they way we prefer to sing it, so I'd rather just keep things the way that
they are". And with division within the ranks of those desiring change,
stay the same way it always and forever will.

The ONLY way that the song is going to change is for all of those
delegates/chapters who *really* want the change to, in ADVANCE of the
convention, agree to a common format that they can present to the rest of
the Fraternity TOGETHER. When we see 30 different proposals go out in the
legislation packets, and there is no statement at the beginning of
convention that the sponsors of all of those pieces of legislation have
talked and chosen to withdrawl all but ONE resolution from being considered,
the effort is doomed, irregardless of how hard the delegates debate the
issue in committee or on the floor.

This statement is not intended to cheapen the work that has been done by
past committees and delegates on this issue, as this dialouge is a part of a
neccesary process required to generate this kind of change. But the cold
reality is that change will not occur so long as there is division among
those desiring a change to the Toast Song.

I would encourage all of those who feel strongly on the issue to contact
each other offline and see if there cannot be a common ground/medium found.
I agree with many of the points made in support of advocating change, but
the burden is (and rightly so) on the side advocating change. There must be
unity in the message and change proposal or history will repeat itself, over
and over again if required.

Best Wishes and Good Luck!
