Just yet another perspective
I'm not saying that I agree with this but from talk within my own =
chapter,
would this change to the toast song help recruitment...
if you were say beginning college (or later on in school) and looking to =
get
involved on campus, interested in service and heard either from a friend =
or
flyer about APO then you come to a meeting, and hear words like brother, =
and
men used repeatedly...=20
I wonder how many potential pledges have been lost do to being turned =
off by
that. Granted obviously it is a fraternal organization and [historical]
symbols and traditions normally go along with such organizations.=20
To me it was not an issue, being well lets just say involved with the =
Boy
Scouts, I was interested in joining since age 12 and it was listed in =
the
back of my Boy Scout Handbook (alongside Exlporing..now Venturing). To =
me
petty things were/are not so important to the bigger picture of things. =
To
me I see many parallels to the Order of the Arrow and OA ceremonies
(obviously where the founders ritual concepts originated from), and the
Toast Song is not much different than OA song , which has not been an =
issue
since women were allowed to join years ago.=20

I have found this debate to be very interesting. I have never had a =
problem
with being called a Brother, or with the Toast Song saying "Men of".
However, I have tried very hard to see things from both points of view. =
I
can understand why some people might feel uncomfortable singing "Men of
Alpha Phi Omega". However, I believe that this song is rooted in =
tradition.
No, it hasn't been around since the beginning, but it was what I =
learned
when I first joined and is therefore held close to my heart. I can also
understand the possibility of not singing the Toast Song, but I know =
that
personally, one of my favorite moments at Nationals is at the end of =
banquet
when we have 3,000 people singing together. I can't describe how my =
heart
fills when I hear all of us joined in song to show our dedication to our
Fraternity and to eachother.
I also feel that while to some people this is a trivial issue, that it =
is
one that we must address. We are an all inclusive organization, and =
whether
or not we agree with changing the song, we need to have an environment =
in
which people feel comfortable expressing themselves and their opinions.
