I have found this debate to be very interesting. I have never had a problem
with being called a Brother, or with the Toast Song saying "Men of".
However, I have tried very hard to see things from both points of view. I
can understand why some people might feel uncomfortable singing "Men of
Alpha Phi Omega". However, I believe that this song is rooted in tradition.
No, it hasn't been around since the beginning, but it was what I learned
when I first joined and is therefore held close to my heart. I can also
understand the possibility of not singing the Toast Song, but I know that
personally, one of my favorite moments at Nationals is at the end of banquet
when we have 3,000 people singing together. I can't describe how my heart
fills when I hear all of us joined in song to show our dedication to our
Fraternity and to eachother.
I also feel that while to some people this is a trivial issue, that it is
one that we must address. We are an all inclusive organization, and whether
or not we agree with changing the song, we need to have an environment in
which people feel comfortable expressing themselves and their opinions.
