Dear Brothers,
We are writing to encourage your chapter to participate in the 2004
National Spring Service Day that will be held April 16-18, 2004. This
event is set to coincide with National Youth Service Day. We, as a
fraternity, are using our Spring Service Day to remind ourselves of our
promise to help serve America's youth. We urge you to plan and carry out
a project with your chapter that either helps youth or directly involves
youth in your service. By teaching the youth of today about the joys of
serving and helping others we build a better future and possibly develop
their life long interest in service.
Last year over 200 Alpha Phi Omega chapters across the country performed
almost 30,000 hours of service for the 2003 National Spring Service Day.
Many of these projects helped local young people in a variety of ways.
Feel free to perform a youth project at any time this spring if April
16-18 is a busy time for your chapter. You can also perform a long-term
project through out the quarter/semester such as reading to children in
the head start program for a few hours a week.
A lot of useful information on planning projects and project ideas are
contained in the National Spring Service Day handbook mailed to your
chapter in November. You may also find it on the National APO website:
There is also a wealth of information at the National Youth Service Day
website: (www.ysa.org/nysd/index.cfm) including planning guides and ways
to publicize your event.
Don't forget to report your participation to the National Office by
May 1st. This is part of the new reporting requirement that the National
Convention started last year. This report can be submitted on the
National APO website.
Please feel free to contact either of the National Spring Service Day
co-chairs: Jennifer Klosterman Rielage (jrielage@siu.edu) or Keith Rielage
(rielagek@u.washington.edu) if you have any questions. We are also
interested in hearing about the service projects that you have planned or
are currently performing that benefit youth.
In Service,
Keith and Jennifer Rielage,
