Windows and DOS together (Wintel) represent about 90% of the total US
market. Is there any market data backing up the claim that 80% of net users
are running Windows? Has anyone actually done net client platform market
research?
Personally, I think the Macintosh port is extremely important if Sun isn't
doing a Win 3.1 port. How many millions of Mac users are there? Count up
all the Unix, NT, and even Windows 95 clients today, and it pales in
comparison to the Mac user base. Mac users are often early adopters of
technology that are more open to new things like Java than the "follow the
leader" crowd. Perhaps psychologically a Windows-NT/95 port was important,
but if you want to get a large user base it's Win 3.1 and Mac for the next
six months. Now consider Macromedia's player might be in NetScape for Mac
and Win 3.1 by the fall. I don't think there's a lot of time to waste.
