Here's my break down, this is just for me and my wife.
/         675MB
/usr      3GB
/home          500MB
swap      64MB
c:\       10MB (used for when I have to boot in to dos and need a little
room)

This works very well for me, if you're going to make backups on a fairly
regular basis /var doesn't grow that much because you can clear it out and
still have a copy if you need it. In fact mine hovers around 30 or so megs.
I also have a small hard drive (850 MB) for a directory named /source that
I use for building tarballed apps as well as where I keep any of the
scripts or code that I make.
