Is this something specific to Linux I don't know about? My serial mouse
uses COM1 which is IRQ 4. Most PS/2 use IRQ 12, so in my experience, PS/2
uses fewer resources, since it may be useful to have a lower IRQ available
for legacy hardware.

Yep, agreed. I have a Barracuda and it is nice. If you need to have
controller backup, I would get two SCSI controllers, or an Adaptec 3940UW
which has two SCSI channels for up to 30 devices.
