Maybe you should look to other products... I use a Proteon GlobeTrotter 70
for my home to Internet connection. It handles compression (fastest
compressed throughput in recent tests), has the integrated NT-1 or not,
same price, is available with an integrated firewall, and will far
outperform an OS processing your packets. It'll dial on demand, add the
second B channel as load increases, and then drop back to one or zero B
channels as traffic dictates.
Then again, I also am one of the folks responsible for the software inside
these routers, so I'm more than a little biased about brands. I have a
network of several Win95 machines, a Linux server and the GT70 router. I'm
able to surf the net from a Win95 machine while someone is hitting the
server and have neither affect the other, give or take the line sharing.
Our higher end models have bandwidth reservation, so that I can ensure my
telnet sessions don't get too clobbered by someone doing massive file
transfers.
I use the Linux machine as a place for the router to log errors to (so I
can monitor the ISDN line, for example as NYNEX runs their line tests
every night, knocking the connection down).
