Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. Add the string "set -x" near the top after the comments. Then reboot with the new kernel. This will tell us, I hope, exactly where the hang is happening. You'll want to remove the "set -x" in the near future; it won't hurt anything, it'll just be a bit verbose.
