Jason,
Assuming that:
1. Your do a correct 'make config' relevant to your hardware
2. Your kernel compiles cleanly
3. Do a 'make zImage' to compile &
4. Do a 'make zlilo' to update the kernel
this will make /vmlinuz -> /vmlinuz.old and add your new kernel in the
root directory /vmlinuz.
Your kernel image should rest in the top level directory.
