After you verify that make zImage works, put a formatted floppy in
drive A: and type 
  make zdisk

This should make you a bootable floppy disk.  You can try the new disk,
and if it works, and your /etc/lilo.conf is set up the way you want, try
 make zlilo

This will take care of the proper copying and move your old /vmlinuz to
/vmlinuz.old or something and should set you up properly.
