I finally got around to trying this and it appears it's not viable on all X
servers. I'm running XFree86-3.1.2-5.rpm (3.1.2F??) Accelerated P9000
server.
If anything is left running on the "background" server it keeps updating
video memory and corrupts the "foreground" server ("foreground" and
"background" usage here indicates which server does or does not have control
of the display and keyboard).
So... it's not always that easy... as they say YMMV.
