I sometimes have a similar problem. The solution for me is, after booting,
let X _finish_ display vt7 and then switch manually as fast as possible to
vt8 to let X finish display that. It's not foolproof and it's the sign that
there _are_ problems, but its working for me. Maybe time to write a bug report
to XFree.
