You need sendmail, or something like it (exim, qmail, smail...) if you
want to be able to send mail from your box (i.e., outbound). Given
your mention of IMAP, I would assume you want to be able to let users
read and reply to their messages on the server. Reply/Compose... will
mean you need outbound mail services.
For what it is worth, I personally prefer exim to sendmail. It was
much easier for me to configure. See http://www.exim.org.
