I have a small '486-33 I use as a backend from my Sparc to run
Intel-only apps via X. I started out small, just the base install. It came
out to about 50 megs (+/- a few meg) of disk used. This gives you the base
system. It sort of felt like an old version of Coherent (if you have any
experience with it). It was "basic" unix. I had to add the telnet daemon
and a few other things. As time went on, I added more and more. Now the
1.2 gig disk is about 50% full.
In the end, yes, it will provide a basic Unix-like environment to learn
from. Like I said earlier, at the end of the install process, where it asks
you "what you wanna install" make sure you de-select everything on the list.
You'd be surprised what ends up on the disk. :)
Can't comment on the memory usage...

    Hardware? Get a Sun! :)
