pop3/imap will feed mail OUT of your system just fine without sendmail
running.  how you get the mail IN before it gets fed out is another story.

I would always recommend having sendmail installed on EVERY unix host
since quite simply, email is too useful to do without.  For small files I
often use it to transfer smallish files from various servers back to my
desktop.

however, if you have an NFS mount with the mailboxes (for example) then
you would be able to get away with not having sendmail running.
