You should be able to use a 3.1.2B server with old libraries.

No release date for NetBSD 1.2 has been announced, although the
beginning of the release cycle was announced on May 15. I'm starting
to do work on the 1.2-based release, so hopefully it won't be long
after the NetBSD 1.2 release, but I can't be sure.
