well.. I do recall that there was a problem with
the ld.so not being happy with version problems with how
XFree named its stuff..

try using the 1.2_BETA version and tell me if it helps
(I put it on catch-22:/pub/ld.so it belongs in /usr/libexec/ld.so
do the isntall as root).

if that doesn't help.. I'm not sure what the way to work with it is.

As for books, there are no NetBSD specific books that I know of, but there
are several BSD4.4 books, which is what you probably want. However,
there is alos a lot of documentation in the manual pages which I suggest
you look at. If you really want to buy the books (most of which are just
pretty-printed manual pages), There's a series of five books (from Oreilly
I think) for the BSD4.4 Operating System.

The last problem you listed (with the make depend failing) is a problem
with older source trees. If you can wait, 1.2 will be released soon which
has a working thing. If not.. there was a way to fix that.. but it escapes
my mind right now... (somebody else will probably follow up with it..
if not.. look through current-users mail archived in discuss on
bloom-picayune.)
