[I reformatted your post; please try to keep your line lengths under
75 characters.]

We are using a PCI system with a 2942. We also run into system
freezes, usually when backing up to DAT. What 2842 drivers are you
using? I know they're not in the standard 1.2.13 kernel, so you must
have got them from somewhere and patched them in. Ours are pretty old
but I haven't been able to find any more except for the ones in the
1.3.XX kernels, which are much too unstable to run. Ours seems to give
"SCSI timeout" errors while writing to the tape drive about 10 minutes
before it freezes (this is a fairly good correlation). Based on what
I've seen it seems to me that the card and/or drivers just can't
handle some SCSI errors and freeze the machine rather than recovering
gracefully (by returning an I/O error to 'tar'). I'm not enough of a
SCSI hacker (and this is a production machine) to delve much further
into it. My fix for the moment is to move the tape drive to another
(ISA/VLB) machine, once I can afford a 1542 to put in it... Once the
1.3.XX kernels are even semi-stable I may try them as well, at least
temporarily.

Anybody else run into this with the 2842/2942? What drivers are people
using?
