Hello everybody!
Now I have a solution to my reported problem.
The problem was:
The command "e2fsck -f -n /dev/sda4" produced different error messages on
every execution. Between these checks was no other command submitted and the
partition was not used or mounted. The partition is 868MB big and has >500MB
data. The option "-n" ensures that the filesystem is not modified so that
the following check starts with the same conditions. The option "-f" ensures
that e2fsck will not rely on the clean bit and will read the data from the
disc or the cache buffer. On my computer (32MB) the cache seems to be to
small to buffer the whole directory information of the >500MB of data. So
the e2fsck has to read the disk. This is confirmed by the flashing disk
lights. Small partitions (20MB) don't make me troubles because after the
first check the following check get the data out of the cache. But I can not
explain why the first check was allways successfull.
My equipment:
Hardware: Compaq ProLiant 1000 Server: 60 MHz Pentium, 32 MB, EISA System
one ISA 3com509 Ethernet, one EISA SCSI-II Adaptec 2742 Twin, two SCSI-II HP
C3323-300 (1GB), one SCSI-II COMPAQ C2247 (1GB) (equivialent to HP 2247),
one SCSI-II COMPAQ CD-ROM CR-503BCQ
Software: Slackware 2.3.0
My solution:
I upgraded to kernel 1.3.9 and I have no more filesystem inconsistecies.
The kernels 1.2.13, 1.2.11 and 1.1.95 do not work properly.
My questions and topics I would like to discuss:
1. Are there similar experiences?
2. Is it possible that the 1.2.x kernel has such a big bug?
3. Is it a bug in the scsi layer or in the aha 274x driver?
4. Who maintains this part of the kernel?
5. Is it possible to release a debuged 1.2.x+1 kernel or is the 1.2.x serie
no longer maintained?
6. How can I build *savely* a debuged 1.2.x kernel?
7. Please tell me if I am wrong.
What I have learned:
Never trust a "stable" version. :)
Never touch a running system.
If you use linux, somebody will some time solve your problem. :)
Greetings
Oliver
