Thanks for the information. After only a few minutes of researching, I
found a mind-numbing amount of information, and combinations of standards.
Ultra-this, SCA-that. Unbelieveable.
So its true that Fast replaced regular scsi-2, and 'Ultra' replaced
'Fast'? And 'Wide' replace 'Ultra'?
Also, if SCSI-3 still isn't a standard, is it wise to purchase controllers
and devices that use it?
And 'Differential'? Is that a combination of 68-pin and power?
Anyone using Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop, and is that part of the SCSI-3
standard?
Finally, what is the difference between Wide and Narrow? I think narrow
is the normal 50 pin, and wide is the 68 pin, correct? Which means that
narrow is Ultra/Fast, I think..
Incidentally, I have read the SCSI-FAQ, and it is pretty brief on this
information.
Now, an update on the information you have all provided me. You guys were
all right, I was going to pay too much. So, in my travels I found
www.cmpexpress.com, which by FAR has better prices than any other place
I've found. For instance:
Drive DirtCheap CMPExpress Desc
Seagate ST32272W $510 $414 2G UW 68-pin
Seagate ST34572W $740 $629 4G UW 68-pin
WD WDE4360-0003 n/a $605 4G UF 50-pin
WD
CMP Express has a much wider selection of drives, but their site
is only organized according to size, not SCSI drive type.
Also, be sure to check out www.computerESP.com. Its some kind of on-line
auction, but the vendors haggle out the best price, not the consumer..
This is where I found CMP Express, and they consistently beat out about a
dozen or more vendors.
One last question. If I get an 80-pin SCA drive, and use a connector to
convert it to my 68-pin 2940UW, am I going to have a problem? I found a
really good deal at onsale, for a WD E4360-0007, 4.3G 7200 UW drive.
Thanks so much for any ideas,
Dave Wreski
