Quoth Kai Harrekilde-Petersen:

| I also experienced problems when trying to backup directly from a NEC 3xp
| CD-ROM drive which I borrowed from work, some time ago (actually, I had
| lockups when I installed from the CD-ROM to the disk too). At that time, I
| attributed it to the CD-ROM, but now, i'm not so sure.

The original NEC 3Xp's have bugs which cause various SCSI bus
problems; mine locked up my SCSI bus fairly regularly until I replaced
it with an NEC 4Xi. When I later sent it in for an (unrelated)
warranty repair, NEC upgraded the internal ROM as well --- and the
repaired drive is considerably better behaved.

One thing I noticed in particular: I set up my system originally the
way the Altos systems I used to work with were set up: hard drives on
0 and 1, tape drive on 6. When I added the 3Xp, I put it on 5... and
it screwed up the tape drive royally. I discovered that the CDROM
would only behave if it was on ID 6; if something else was on ID 6,
the CDROM would interfere with it. This no longer appears to happen
with the upgraded CDROM. If your DAT is on ID 6, this may well be the
problem.

Jonathan I. Kamens at MIT had similar problems with an NEC 3Xi, so it
appears to be a general problem with the NEC 3x series. Anyone with
one of these drives might want to contact NEC for an upgrade.
