Linux 1.2.13 is way too old and outdated. 
I don't think that 'upgrade to the latest stuff' is always the right thing,
but I would strongly suggest you to get a newer version of Linux.
As the 2940 support had some trouble in the past, I would suggest you to start
with a 2.0.0 kernel, and then try a recent one (2.0.26 is current, AFAIK)
when you can compile it yourself.
There was some trouble reported with kernels 2.0.13(?) until 2.0.24 and
the Adaptec.
