UMI & Information Access have both done software updates which
rendered previous discs unreadable. In UMI's case, they have
made a "new" mastering of the previous data, compatible with
their "new" software, available for purchase. In InfoAccess'
case, a combined backfile is available for purchase, which is not
particularly useful to us; like many libraries, we subscribed to
Academic Index because it matches our holdings, but the backfile
includes the "other", public library-oriented databases of theirs
which we wished to avoid.
InfoAccess also wins another special incompatibility award for
first issuing Academic Index on 2 CDs which could _not_ be run
separately, then reissuing a few months later in the format
described above.
